In regards to the departures, it's my opinion that our goose flocks started evacuating in mass sooner than what I've seen in the past. Usually these big flights seemed to have occurred starting in the middle of March and some of the really big flights started in the last days of February this year.  I don't remember this ever happening that early, at least not in the numbers reported. Even the message about the unprecedented flights of geese over New York were at that same period.

I agree, it's interesting to note changes in the dates of "first of year" or "first of season" sightings and discuss possible causes.

But what about "last of season" birds? Will our visiting juncos and White-throated Sparrows depart earlier than usual this year? Keep an eye out and share your observations.
