Mikey Lutmerding texted us at 8:20 this morning as we were getting ready to head out to work festivities at Historic St. Mary's City for Maryland Day. Change of plans and divert course to Pt. Lookout where he had an adult Black-headed Gull with full black hood. Originally it had been on the sand spit south of the point but by the time we arrived, it had moved out into the sunny area of water east of the lighthouse. After scanning for about 30 minutes, the bird reappeared and flew south where we had distant scope views with nice side-by-side comparisons with Laughing Gulls which were in abundance. Patty Craig and Marty Cribb arrived while the bird was still in view. At 10 we had to leave.

Other interesting birds in the area were a House Sparrow (which is odd at the point), an Eastern Meadowlark which was in the grassy area inside the circle, and a couple of Barn Swallows. Mikey had had a Northern Rough-winged Swallow but it had departed before we arrived. There was a steady stream of Red-throated Loons heading north mostly well offshore. A good number of Northern Gannets were fishing or flying north.

We stopped at the pond briefly but neither the Sora nor the Virginia Rail were vocalizing.
