Returning from my Saturday morning trips to Jefferson, MD i have gotten into the habit of taking the less travelled roads which wind along Catoctin Creek on my return.  Corun Road off of MD 383 (Broad Run Rd) intersects with Poffenberger Rd near a small creek, which hosted a GB Heron with fish in beak at the time of my passing.  A left there will take you past Susan Hanson's potterey in an old Mill bldg - worth a stop if she's open.  Just past her place the road intersects Catoctin Creek.  Deer may be seen - sometimes in numbers and due to the necessity of travelling at low speeds on the narrow, unpaved roads, can be enjoyed without fear of calamatous encounters.  Yesterday, deer, herons, (perhaps) mergansers, and most notably Wood ducks in full breeding plumage were present.  The male wood duck wins my vote for MOST BEAUTIFUL waterbird and, if i were pushed to give an opinion, most beautiful of any of our NA birds.
