Hi all - Lisa and I had an early Broad-Winged Hawk at Southwest Area Park at mid-day today. We got good looks at the bird as it soared over the marshy area and then landed in a distant tree.
It was lighter underneath than a juvenile Red-Shouldered, with broad wings that were tapered at the end. Appeared more chunky in the breast than Red-Shouldered, and was distinctly smaller-headed and relatively short-tailed.
A quick eBird check shows this is 10-12 days before the usual arrival date in Baltimore County. Statewide, the frist Broad-Winged was also noted on April 1 last year.
Good Birding!
