Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from March 30, 2012
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission
from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, March
2012, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration
Project at Poplar Island.
Many species were preparing for the nesting season with large recent
increases in presence of cormorants, mallard, osprey, herring gull and tree
swallow. Also, note the presence of five species of wading birds in the area
of the historic nest sites. Most interesting is the unexpected presence of
eight species of shorebirds, highlighted by three dark gray breasted,
long-billed dowitchers.
