John Landers and I birded S.S.P. from 0730 to1000 before meeting
with members of his family for a traipse up and down the hills to view a
really old, specimen oak tree and a nearby really old, specimen beech tree,
plus lots of early wildflowers in bloom.
We had 51 spp. of birds, including a possible Vesper Sparrow. Lots of
Cormorant and 1 overhead Loon; both vultures; Cooper's, RS & RT
Hawks; a goodly no. of Bald Eagles and Ospsrey; some water fowl,
including 3 Wood Ducks. Other nice sightings: Pileated Woodpecker,
E. Phoebe, Tree and RW Swallow, Purple Martin, WB Nuthatch and
BG Gnatcatcher.
A total of 5 warbler species: Parula, Myrtle, Pine, Palm (all eastern)
and LA Waterthrush. A good no. of BH Cowbirds were acting
suspiciously. Also, a good no. of E. Towhees and Chipping Spasrrows
accompanied Field, WT, Swamp, Song and the possible Vesper Sparrow
(quick look, with white outer tail feathers-retrices-seen as it flared for
landing).
The weather was gorgeous and a good time was had by all.
