Hi Everyone,

While leaving the house around 6:30 a.m. this morning (4/12), I was shocked to flush a BARN OWL. It was roosting in our large Norway Spruce, and flushed immediately as I stepped out our front door. I heard its first movements and looked up expecting to see a Cooper's Hawk, but instead I gasped to see a Barn Owl dropping out of the tree and flying across the street. It disappeared behind the houses lining White Pond (north of Weinberg Park) and must have flown into Weinberg. Although probably not outlandish as a night migrant if I were recording night flight calls, this is not a species I have often dared to consider. Our neighborhood is just south of Fort Smallwood Park, which sits at the tip of a north-pointing peninsula. The peninsula does seem to act as a funnel in spring migration. For a northbound migrant seeking roost sites at dawn, the site of Baltimore on the horizon must often be less than inviting. This is a very cool migrant record, as well as
an instant favorite sighting for our yard.

Good birding!

Bill
