Lucy, these photos are GREAT! 

 Do you know how often mergs will breed down here?  I had always thought they bred up north, over the summer.  I wonder if, like Canada geese, another duck is learning that they can do as well or better by not migrating?  Sibley's map shows that neither Common nor Red Breasted mergs, in theory, breed much south of Canada (Common breeds over much of Michigan, plus northern Minnesota).
