Jim, et al.

The first Charles County record for Little Gull was April 14, 2004 off Mount
Victoria Road. The first year bird was photographed, and seen the next
morning by Gwen Brewer and me. I found the bird in a large flock of Bonies
during a storm on the 14th. I posted the record maybe to the Voice, sent
the record to Marshall Iliff and Jim Stasz, perhaps others. No one chased
this bird but is was well documented. The picture is crappy but
identifiable.

The Yellowbook was published May 1996 therefore the Little Gull would not be
in that publication. The Yellowbook will not show any of my other first
county record since 1996. Bob Ringler keeps better track of the county
records so he is an excellent source to check w/. The Yellowbook won't show
White Pelican, Brown Pelican (several records), White Ibis (two records),
Ross's Goose, American Avocet, Baird's Sandpiper, Sanderling, Parasitic
Jaeger, Black Skimmer, and a bunch of others that have been documented since
1996. The Yellowbook is a great reference but not the end all of county
records.

Great find, and on the same day as I had the bird, but 8 years later.

Maybe I should post my old records on eBird as soon as I catch up on the
herp atlas.

Also, if you want to come down and help on the Charles County May count on
May 12 you are very welcome to return. I have some great locations
available to you and any others available.

A great day to be out birding was made even better when I discovered an
alternate (breeding) plumaged Little Gull at Port Tobacco Marina in
Charles County this evening. Appears to be the first county record (no
indication of a record in the Yellow Book or eBird). It was roosting on
a sand bar with about 30 Bonaparte's Gulls from about 6 to 6:30 PM. I
lost sight of it at 6:30 but did not see it fly away. It probably just
flew to an area obscured by salt marsh grasses. Some record shots here:

Also of interest were a pair of Dunlin, and several Caspian Terns. At
the nearby Rose Hill Rd. Pond was a Blue-winged Teal together with
several Gadwall.

Good birding!
