This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, April 17 at 11 AM.

Top birds this week are PACIFIC LOON* in VA and SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* in VA.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, RED-NECKED GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN, AMERICAN and LEAST BITTERN,GLOSSY IBIS, MISSISSIPPI KITE, rails
including COMMON GALLINULE, SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds including UPLAND
SANDPIPER and RUFF, gulls including LITTLE GULL, terns, COMMON RAVEN,
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, warblers, sparrows, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

Many observers continued to post a lot of personal First-of-Season sightings
this past week including TRICOLORED HERONS at a couple of locations, two
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS over Bowie, Prince George’s Co, MD; and a BLUE GROSBEAK at
Frying Pan Farm Park, Fairfax Co, VA on April 15.

The PACIFIC LOON* that has spent several winters on Kerr Reservoir,
Mecklenburg Co, VA was seen again on Apr 13.

On April 16 a couple sitting on their deck after dinner observed a
SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* fly over their home in Evington, Campbell Co, VA.

The COMMON or EURASIAN TEAL at the University of MD’s Central Farm in Howard
Co, MD, was seen again on April 11 & 12.  A SURF SCOTER was found April 15
at Beaverdam Reservoir, Loudoun Co, VA.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was found April 14 at Fort Monroe, Hampton, VA.

A flock of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen flying on and off during the
week over the Hog Island WMA, Surry Co, VA from CVWO’s College Creek Hawk
Watch, Williamsburg, VA.

The AMERICAN BITTERN at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, NE DC, was re-found on
April 10.  Four AMERICAN BITTERNS and a LEAST BITTERN were observed April 15
in the impoundment at Swan Harbor, MD; an AMERICAN BITTERN and a KING RAIL
were there on April 16.  An AMERICAN BITTERN was also seen April 15 at
Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD.

GLOSSY IBIS were seen at a couple locations including near Leedstown,
Westmoreland Co, VA on April 15.

MISSISSIPPI KITES have returned to the King’s Park area of Annandale,
Fairfax Co, VA with sightings on April 12 and 16.

A VIRGINIA RAIL was found April 12 at Rattlesnake Spring at the Blandy
Experimental Farm, Clarke Co, VA and through the 14th.  A VIRGINIA RAIL and
a SORA were observed April 15 at Swan Cree/Cox Creek property, northern Anne
Arundel Co, MD.  A SORA was heard April 14 at Blairs Valley Lake, Washington
Co, MD.  A VIRGINIA RAIL and a SORA were also heard calling on April 14 at
Point Lookout SP, St Mary’s Co, MD.  A COMMON GALLINULE was found April 15
in King George (Co, VA) Ponds.  Another was seen the same day at the
Fairmount WMA, Somerset Co, MD.

Four SANDHILL CRANES were seen April 10 at Oxbow Lake, western Anne Arundel
Co, MD.

Shorebird numbers were also on the increase this past week.  PIPING PLOVERS
are nesting at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA.  Four PIPING PLOVERS were
seen April 16 at Gordon’s Pond, Cape Henlopen SP, DE. Two BLACK-NECKED
STILTS were seen April 15 at Truitt’s Landing Rd, Worcester Co, MD.  An
UPLAND SANDPIPER was found April 14 at Kenilworth Park, NE DC on April 14 &
15.  A RUFF was among several shorebirds in the mudflats across from Jackson
Landing, Prince George’s Co, MD, on April 16.

A FRANKLIN’S GULL was seen April 10 at Riley’s Lock, Seneca, Montgomery Co,
MD.  A LITTLE GULL was seen April 14 at the Port Tobacco Marina, Charles Co,
MD.  A  LITTLE GULL was feeding in the rapids at Violette's Lock, Montgomery
Co MD on April 15.

A ROYAL TERN was seen April 15 over Belmont/Occoquan Bay, Fairfax, Co, VA.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen April 15 in the Swoope/Middlebrook area of
Augusta Co, VA.

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was found April 16 near the Humpback Rocks Visitor
Center on the Blue Ridge Pkwy, Augusta Co, VA.

A COMMON RAVEN was seen on Capitol Hill in SE DC on April 13.  This past
week four nestlings were observed in the COMMON RAVEN nest at the T. Howard
Duckett Dam at Rocky Gorge Reservoir, Howard Co, MD.

More warblers showed up in the area during this week. A SWAINSON’S WARBLER
was photographed April 14 along the Washington Ditch, Great Dismal Swamp
NWR, Suffolk, VA. 

The VESPER SPARROW at Hains Point, SW DC was seen again on April 12. A
VESPER SPARROW was seen April 14 along Broadfording Rd in Allegany Co, MD.
A VESPER SPARROW was among the many sparrows found in Howard Co, MD on April
15.  A VESPER SPARROW was found April 15 along Harrison Rd, Fauquier Co, VA.

A LARK SPARROW* was seen at Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA on April
14 along Edmonds Ln; it was not relocated the next day.

RUSTY BLACKBIRDS continue to be reported in the area with 11 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS at the China Clay Road wetland area, Augusta Co, VA; at the Great
Dismal Swamp; and at Bull Run Regional Park, Fairfax Co, VA, all on April
16.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
