Hi all-
This morning I led a Birding Through History tour of Antietam National
Battlefield for Potomac Valley Audubon Society and Washington County Bird
Club's IMBD celebration. It was a beautiful day, and the 16 attendees and
I enjoyed exploring the wide variety of habitats available on the
battlefield. The lack of warblers was a surprise, but the incredible
abundance of Grasshopper Sparrows more than made up for it! 56 total
species (I added several species afterwards). Highlights included:
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW: calling from almost every grassy field, all morning
long. Many seen, more heard. I stopped counting at 28.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER: At West Woods. A surprise for many.
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO: 2 at Burnside Bridge
HORNED LARK: in field behind Sunken Road
BALTIMORE AND ORCHARD ORIOLES: Burnside Bridge and the Cornfield
VESPER, FIELD, SONG SPARROWS
SOLITARY SANDPIPER: at pond by Roulette Farm
ACADIAN, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, WOOD-PEWEE, PHOEBE
CLIFF SWALLOWS: Nesting under Burnside Bridge!
WARBLING VIREOS
INDIGO BUNTINGS: Lots
Lots of fun!
Good birding!
