I thought some of you might be interested in seeing these photos (see link below) which were taken Sunday 4/28/2012 of a Great Blue Heron which got caught by the wing in a piece of lost kite string which was stretched between two trees over a small creek bed in Arbutus. The bird was hanging about 30-40 feet off the ground. With the help of the fire department we were able to get the bird down and it was transported to a wildlife rehabilitator where I was very happy to learn that it had not broken its wing in the mishap. It was pretty weak from trying to free itself but I think its stay at he rehabbers is going to be pretty short. A happy ending to a really bizarre incident. Mike

(Mary, this Kodak gallery version has a few more photos than on Facebook if you want to send this to anyone!) Thanks for helping out today.

My neighbor noticed a Blue Heron with it's wing trapped in kite string. The poor thing was flapping around but couldn't get loose! I called my friend who is a Dept. of Natural Resources police officer and animal specialist, Michael Lathroum to see if he could rescue it. Although he has the knowledge of what to do with it, it was so high up in the air, he couldn't reach it. So we called the fire department and the rest of the story is told in my photos.
