This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, May 1, at 10 AM.

Top birds this week are: SANDHILL CRANES in MD and VA, RUFF in MD, THAYER'S
GULL* in MD, MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD* in MD, CERULEAN WARBLER in DC, HENSLOW'S
SPARROW* in MD, and PAINTED BUNTING* in VA.

Other birds of interest include: BALD EAGLE, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER, BLACK-NECKED STILT, AMERICAN AVOCET, WESTERN SANDPIPER,
flycatchers, vireos, warblers, tanagers, etc.

SANDHILL CRANES were seen at two places this week. The first, on Apr 25, was
spotted over Shenandoah NP, VA. The second SANDHILL CRANE was flying down
the Potomac River near Fort Frederick, Washington Co MD, on Apr 29.
Hart-Miller Island, in Baltimore Co MD, hosted two uncommon birds on Apr 30:
a female RUFF (i.e., a REEVE), and a THAYER'S GULL. A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was
reported Apr 28 in Brookeville MD, Montgomery Co. A rarity any time inside
the Capital Beltway, a CERULEAN WARBLER was reported in Rock Creek Park, NW
DC, on Apr 28. HENSLOW'S SPARROW is supposedly rare in Harford Co MD, but
two were reported singing on Apr 27 in Forest Hill. A female PAINTED BUNTING
was reported Apr 29 at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co VA.

Conowingo Dam, between Harford and Cecil Counties in MD, always hosts BALD
EAGLES, but a count of 147 on Apr 26 was impressive. There was a small wave
of BROAD-WINGED HAWKS on Apr 26, 14 at the Fort Smallwood hawkwatch, Anne
Arundel Co MD, but only a few singles were reported elsewhere.

AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen at several places: on Apr 25 along
Leipsic-Smyrna Rd, Kent Co DE, on Apr 26 at Fowler Beach, Sussex Co DE, and
on Apr 30 at Hart-Miller Island. Arriving a bit early, BLACK-NECKED STILTS
were seen Apr 24 at Swan Creek Wetland, Anne Arundel Co MD, Apr 25 at Poplar
Island, Talbot Co MD, and at Hart-Miller Island, also on Apr 25. AMERICAN
AVOCETS were seen Apr 26 & 28 at Fowler Beach DE, and Apr 29 & 30 at Swan
Creek Wetland. A WESTERN SANDPIPER in breeding plumage was spotted at Fowler
Beach on Apr 26.

Despite the unusually warm March and the unusually cool April, migration is
progressing pretty much on schedule. Maybe a few days earlier than expected,
a flood of flycatchers, vireos, warblers, tanagers, etc., were seen
throughout the reporting area. The only warblers not reported were the
normally late arrivers.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.

The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606,
http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent
source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.

To report bird sightings, e-mail your report to
or call 301-652-1088. Please post reports before midnight Monday, identify
the county as well as state, and include your name and a Tuesday morning
contact, either e-mail or phone.

Thank you for calling, and GOOD BIRDING.
