I encountered two female wood ducks on the Potomac River, each with about ten ducklings. Usually I have only seen single females with their young, but these two seemed to work as a team. When they saw me one moved off shore with all of the duckings in tow, and the other swam towards me, presumably to distract attention.

Trees along the shore above Rileys were good for Blackpoll and protonotary warblers and both waterthrush singing. A chestnut-sided warbler was working the parking lot at Violettes. The river bank at Blockhouse point remains good for both orioles and a warbling vireo. The main challenge for sighting warblers all morning was the enormous number of cedar waxwings. Every tree with warblers seemed to have at least ten waxwings flitting about.
