This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, May 15, at 7 AM. 

Top birds this week are YELLOW RAIL* and WESTERN TANAGER* in MD, and
SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* in DE.

Other birds of interest include COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN*, ANHINGA*, WHITE-FACED IBIS*, MISSISSIPPS KITE, SANDHILL CRANE,
RUFF, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD*, warblers, sparrows, and
PAINTED BUNTING*.

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* was observed over Prime Hook Beach Rd, Sussex Co, DE
on May 13.

A YELLOW RAIL* was heard in a marsh along Big Monie Creek, Somerset Co, MD
on May 10. Another YELLOW RAIL* was heard in a back yard in St.
Mary's Co, MD on May 13.

A WESTERN TANAGER* was seen at Picnic Area C in Black Hill Regional Park,
Montgomery Co, MD on May 12.

Among the late-stayers this season were three COMMON LOONS and a HORNED
GREBE on the Potomac River at Hains Point, Washington, DC on May 9.

Six AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS* were found in Kent Narrows, Queen Anne's Co, MD
on May 12.

There are second-hand reports that the ANHINGA* at Lake Waterford Pk, Anne
Arundel Co, MD was still present late in the week.

A WHITE-FACED IBIS* was seen on Newport Bay Rd in the Indian Creek
community, Worcester Co, MD on May 11.

A MISSISSIPPI KITE* soared over the forest at Walker Nature Education Center
in Reston, Fairfax Co, VA on May 10. Another MISSISSIPPI KITE* was seen at
the College Creek Hawkwatch near Williamsburg, VA on May 12.

A SANDHILL CRANE was at the Swan Creek facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on May
9. There are limited hours for birder access and birders must check in at
the office. Four SANDHILL CRANES were seen at E. A. Vaughn North, Worcester
Co, MD on May 12.

Shorebird migration is on and traditional sites along the Delaware Bay and
in Virginia are active. A RUFF was seen from the Marsh Trail in Chincoteague
NWR, Accomack Co, VA on May 9.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was found at the end of the River Trail in
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Washington, DC on May 11 and 12.

A possible MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD* was reported from a trail in Cub Run Park in
Centreville, Fairfax Co, VA on May 9.
 
Hot spots in the warbler migration this past week included the maintenance
yard and nearby areas in Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC; Leesylvania SP,
Prince William Co, VA; Susquehanna SP, Cecil and Harford Cos, MD; and The
Point near Quantico, Prince William Co, VA. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was
spotted on Old Legislative Rd, Allegany Co, MD on May 13. A CONNECTICUT
WARBLER was in Milford Mill Park, Baltimore Co, MD on May 10. A MOURNING
WARBLER was seen in the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area, Howard Co, MD on
May 11.

Four HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were found along Old Legislative Rd. on May 13. Four
NELSON'S SPARROWS were singing in the Ragged Island WMA, Isle of Wight Co,
VA on May 11. A NELSON'S SPARROW was seen at Ft McHenry, Baltimore, MD on
May 11. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was in Sligo Creek Park, Montgomery Co, MD on
May 11 and another was in an Annapolis, MD yard on May 12.

A female PAINTED BUNTING* was seen in the Dutch Gap Conservation Area,
Chesterfield Co, VA on May 11.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
