Hi Everyone,

We kicked off our field season out on Poplar Island on Tuesday, 5/22.  As in all other years we will continue to monitor the Least & Common Terns, Snowy Egrets (and other waders) and Osprey nesting on the island.  Lots of Least Terns around, and we were able to mark 42 nests that we'll follow throughout the season.  A fair number of Common Terns too, but, they seem to be getting a late start nesting this year as we found very few nests.  We'll be back next week to continue the above and do the egret and the Double-crested Cormorant nest counts.  Below is a rough estimate of what we had while we were working.

Great Blue Heron 6
Snowy Egret ~15
Cattle Egret ~12
Mallard ~ 75, some with broods already
LESSER SCAUP 1 pair, female appeared to be attempting to nest as she was sitting on land pulling material towards her.
Osprey ~10
Black-necked Stilt 7
American Oystercatcher 2
Semipalmated Sandpiper ~200
Least Sandpiper ~35
Dunlin ~50
RED KNOT 1

On Wednesday, 5/23 we started our benthic sampling at Eastern Neck NWR.  We were collecting sediment cores in the marsh, so, very little time to observe birds, but, I  made a mental note of what we had.  During lunch I got a checklist and tallied up everything.  Below is the list.
