Hi,

My friend Jason and I birded Blackwater on Sunday, focusing mostly on the
Wildlife Drive.  Biting flies were present in some areas but they
weren't so numerous as to severely limit our enjoyment of the refuge.

The highlight for me was 6 (5m, 1f) Black-necked Stilts, 4 White-rumped
Sandpipers and an out-of-habitat Sanderling on the Wildlife Drive.  Most
shorebirds were one area of the drive but looking at the refuge map I can't remember
which area it was.  They were Semipalmated Plover, Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper,
Greater Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper and Dunlin.
I had a tough time trying to ID many of the peeps but I think those
were all Semi and Least.  Virtually all shorebirds were actively
foraging.  We found no obvious migrant songbirds but that isn't
surprising considering the late date.

Take care,

Scott Baron
