...and hain't the weather I'm talking about, neither. An early Sunday
morning survey at the Cox Creek/Swan Creek property in northern AA County
produced a continuing male RING-NECKED DUCK, male LESSER SCAUP and two
RUDDY DUCKs in the north cell, and three more LESSER SCAUPs and a hen
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER in the nearby river. As I walked the woodland road
beyond the back gate (non public), I heard what sounded like a
white-throat, but was willing to kiss it off as some fledgling of some
unknown species. I pursued the sound, though, and was rewarded with a
great look at a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, perhaps only my second one in June
in MD.

Friday night's monsoon brought some interesting birds to the yard. On
Saturday morning (2 June) an ACADIAN FLYCATCHER hicupped around our yard
for most of the morning, visiting the top of just about every mature tree
on the property (must have been some yummy bugs around). Interestingly,
the only other time we've ever had an Acadian in the yard was on the very
same date in 2009. This morning, Elaine was given quite a start when she
flushed a WOODCOCK from the fringes of the yard, and enjoyed a flyover
GREEN HERON. Also this year, for the first time ever, we have a pair of
hummingbirds hanging around well into the breeding season. We are hoping
they have a nest somewhere nearby. And their favorite offering from our
yard--Black and Blue Salvia, which is now in full bloom.

Happy June birding--this is THE month for surprises.
