Subject: [MDBirding] Barn Owl in D.C.

On Friday night, I was in my backyard in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC. At 11:30 p.m., a large bird flew low over my yard and landed on a gazebo-type structure in my next-door neighbor's yard. My first thought was that it must be a hawk, but when I took a few steps to get a better look, the bird turned its head and a barn owl was looking right at me. It stayed for about 15 seconds before flying off to the west.

Not sure if barn owls reside in the city or if this bird was just migrating through.
