I did my weekly meteorological tower climb here at SERC, in Edgewater, this morning. My species composition was mostly Golden-crowned Kinglets with a dozen split between several groups working different trees about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up the canopy and only 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Chimney Swift numbers from last week's 340 were down to a single bird. Might be my last of the season. A single Red-breasted Nuthatch was a new county year bird for me. And a single Blue-headed Vireo was doing its weird scolding chatter which is what drew my attention to it.

Now, off to do stream monitoring. Nice to get paid to be out in the field in weather like this!

I got to Governor Bridge before sunrise this morning and therefore before the flock of geese took off the big pond, and saw six Cackling Geese with them. Five of them were in a tight knit group, and another was solitary. They were joined by approximately 475 Canada Geese. Also interesting this morning was the continued inundation of kinglets, especially Ruby-crowneds - I "counted" 45 of them. If a magical census was taken of all the birds on the property, I wouldn't blink if the number was three or four times that. The only warblers I saw were a Common Yellowthroat and a Tennessee Warbler.
