Last evening (1/5/13), around dusk (~5:30), I heard a Woodcock peenting on my property near my back woods. This may be the earliest in the year I've ever heard one.
Today (a beautiful winter day!) I observed 5 Bald Eagles soaring lazily high over my property. There were four adults and one first-year immature. Two of the adults engaged in "close formation" flying and some vocalizations. (My property is a few miles northeast of Allen's Fresh, so seeing eagles here is not surprising but always a treat.)
It may be winter, but already there are stirrings of spring!
