When I finally found the SANDHILL CRANE this morning behind the house on the northeast lot at New Enterprise and Deep Landing in Huntington, it walked around the house out of sight upon seeing me. I quickly ran around to the other side, but it was not visible from that vantage point. I believe the Crane was hidden in the backyard all morning and only walked into plain sight to feed around noon. Suffice it to say, you might need to spend considerable time if you chase this bird. The area is very birdy and I had high counts of Dark-eyed Junco (232) and White-throated Sparrow (230). On Carroll Road I found 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
In the afternoon, I chased (and dipped on) the Say's Phoebe, which according to the despondent crew there upon my arrival had not been seen since 9 or 10 in the morning. I stayed until five. Best birds I saw were a pair of BALD EAGLES flying down the river, an adult and an imm RED-HEADED WOODPECKER west of the big barn on Sixes Bridge Rd behind the white ranch-style house, and 6 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. Needless to say there are still many birders interested in hearing timely reports of this bird.
