It was a gorgeous day to be out, although a bit windy at times. I walked from Violette's Lock ( mile 22) nearly to mile 24 and back. 11:30-12:45
Between Violette's and Riley's Lock Pied-billed Grebe 1 on this stretch of the towpath most noteworthy were two flocks of Eastern Bluebirds 15+
Beyond Riley's Lock: All headed upstream: American Coot 12 Ring-necked Duck 1 Bufflehead 11
River Road 200 ft north of Partnership Road at. 1:30 I was very pleased to get good views of the continuing Sandhill Crane in the corn field. This was only my second sighting of one in this area. The other was flying downstream on the Potomac River north of Conn Island in 2004 ( I believe)
Hughes Hollow 1:45- 3:15 Northern Harrier 1 Ring-necked Duck 1 Brown Creeper 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler 1 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 1 Swamp sparrow 2 Song sparrow 5 Eastern Bluebird 3 Winter Wren (heard) 2 Carolina Chickadee 3 Titmouse 2
