Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from April 10, 2013 This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, March 2013, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The number of wintering surface-feeding waterfowl at the site has now diminished to less than 150 individuals while more nesting species and numbers are arriving daily. In fact, I found eight nesting species today that were not here 48 hours ago. Most exciting today was a Pileated Woodpecker in one of our few small trees by headquarters. Alexia and Claire actually viewed the bird with optics while being on the opposite side of the Cell 6 dike from the tree. I only heard it screeching loudly. This is another new species for the project site. Otherwise, the census list includes a good variety of wintering, north transient, and nesting species.
