For 21 years I have maintained a Prothonotary nest box "trail" along the
C&O canal towpath as follows:
Riley's Lock - 7
Hughes Hollow - 4 (all destroyed by shotgun blasts and not replaced)
Pennyfield Lock - 1
Violettes Lock - 1
I have repaired ice, wind and vandal damage and controlled cowbirds. My
boxes fledged a lot of young warblers over the years.
Today at Rileys I was astonished to see that all seven of my boxes had been
removed and replaced with new boxes. Does anyone know who is responsible?
