Subject: [MDBirding] Alder Flycatcher at Schoolhouse Pond
During my morning walk around Schoolhouse Pond today (5/16), I came across a singing Alder Flycatcher. The bird was vocalizing in the scrubby willows along the boardwalk near the residential townhouses, but on the "pond" side of the boardwalk. I listened to the bird vocalizing at close range for several minutes, separating it from Willow Flycatcher by voice. Like yesterday's Black-billed Cuckoo, this is another bird that is pretty unusual at the pond. I went back and checked my records from the pond, and the other sightings of Alder Flycatcher at or near the pond include May 19th, 2006 at the courtyard at the County Administration Building (across the street from the pond), May 23, 2006 in the willows at the pond (perhaps the same bird?) and May 13, 2010, when another Alder Flycatcher was heard and seen in the trees around the pond. Otherwise, it was fairly quiet during both my morning and lunchtime walks. I found no migrant warblers, with only the resident Parula, Redstarts, and yellowthroats present.
