At Blockhouse Point, C and O Canal, 1 mi south of Violette's Lock. the first call seemed to come from a tree above the towpath. then two calling low overhead over the towpath at 8:25, then a swarm emerged over the rapids,mostly heading downriver, low altitude between 8:30 and 8:40 pm. 22 in sight at one time. this is one mile downstream from where I saw 55 last week. when the nighthawks started flying upriver I stopped counting to avoid counting backtrackers. 4 Common Mergansers flying down river.
