Robin, I was with Sam Freiberg along Pine Knob Rd. during the same time period. A few from our party walked down the gated "fire road" on the north side of Pine Knob, while the rest stayed and searched from alongside Pine Knob Rd. itself. I can't say exactly what the time was, but when the others returned from the fire road, we all discussed having heard what we took to be a Raven also. It seemed to be coming from deep in the pine woods to the west of the fire road, north of Pine Knob Rd. and was in close association with a number of American Crows cawing, harrassing something in the woods (perhaps the raven). It emitted a deep resonant cronking sound, very gutteral and not like any crow that I've ever heard. I have heard Ravens in the mountains along Skyline Drive in VA. When I got home, I looked in the yellow book to see the Ravens status in Carroll County, and found that it has only occurred once or twice, so passed it off as something else. But still, it did sound like a Raven to us. Perhaps someone else got a visual. By the way, you and I did a Howard County mid winter count a few years back, if you recall. Good to hear from you again!
