Paul Pisano sent this along to me, so I herewith forward it to MDOsprey for your delectation... From: Pisano, Paul [SMTP:Paul.Pisano@fhwa.dot.gov] <mailto:[SMTP:Paul.Pisano@fhwa.dot.gov]> Sent: Tuesday, February 17, 1998 8:44 AM Subject: Tidewater VA sightings Les, Wallace, Norm, Here are some sightings from the past 2 days that you may find of interest. On Sunday, 2/15, Ottavio Janni & I drove to Cape Charles. We stopped at Saxis Marshes on the way, and saw/heard the following in the afternoon/dusk (all from Rt. 788): 1 Rough-legged Hawk 1 Short-eared Owl c.15 Virginia Rails (calling in marshes) 5 Blue-winged Teal (actually seen off another road (don't know the name), closer to Saxis) On Monday, 2/16, we birded the Eastern Shore NWR, CBBT, Ft. Story, and Rudee Inlet. Here are the highlights. 2 Clapper Rails (flushed in marshes at ESNWR) c.35 Common Eiders at CBBT #4 (mix of sexes and ages, but didn't quantify), plus one subadult male at CBBT #2 7 Harlequin Ducks at CBBT #3 5 King Eiders at CBBT #2 (1 subadult male, 4 females) 1 prob. 1st winter Glaucous x Herring hybrid at Ft. Story (overall a very large, bulky, and very pale brown bird with a bi-colored bill; too dark to be pure Glaucous, but too pale throughout (esp. primaries and tail) to be a pure Herring) 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Ft. Story (1-1st winter, 1-3rd winter, and 1 adult). We looked for (briefly), but didn't see the Black-tailed Gull, the white-winged gulls reported from the Rudee Inlet area, and the Painted Buntings at the campground/trailer park off Gen. Booth Blvd. (the pair had been there the day before (2/15), according to the residents). Finally, for those who are keeping tabs of good eateries (I've seen discussions on various lists), the Sting Ray, which is at the Exxon station on Rt. 13, about 5 miles north of the turn-off for the ESNWR, has an excellent and cheap breakfast.
