On Friday, March 12, I visited Back River Waste Management Area, The
Hammerman area of Gunpowder State Park, and the Dundee Marina close by.
Back River had less than usual to offer, perhaps because of the extensive
construction equipment making plenty of noise. Bonaparte's Gulls were
still numerous, though. At Gunpowder, I saw rafts and rafts of scaup (I
could identify only six flying birds as "lessers"), two bald eagles, an
osprey, and a hermit thrush. At the Marina, Red-breasted and Hooded
Mergansers, and a Wood Duck. A fun morning!

At the Marina, I also saw about 40 Mute Swans. Does anybody know the
present status of Mute Swans in our area? The National Geographic guide
says that some wild populations are getting established in the East. Does
anybody know whether the mute swans at this marina are a resident flock,
introduced some time ago, or could they be wild birds?
