the rail was still present at 945 this morning, although not exactly where jim and rob reported it. it was just inside the independence ave. entrance to the haupt garden, and as jim described it, wary but not secretive. there is a cluster of low bushes just to the east of the gate, under which it appeared to be eating worms. I sat down on one of the many benches nearby, and at one point it ventured out onto the sidewalk within 5 meters from me. for those who don't know it, the garden is easily worth a detour for its formal plantings of tropical and temperate flowers (although not shady, and hence brutally hot on a sunny midsummer's day) -- an urban oasis for birds and people alike . . . many thanks to jim felley, whose alert and timely reporting meant a new life bird for me.
