At the University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK, Chimney Swifts in the Fall congregated in a tall chimney at the northeast corner of the campus (perhaps they still do, this was in the late '70's). They emerged before dawn, in darkness that was barely tinged with light. From what I could see (not much), they formed a diffuse cloud around the chimney. I could not detect any funnel-like movement of the cloud. By the time there was light enough for me to see, they had dispersed. Jim Jim Felley Smithsonian Institution irmss668@sivm.si.edu
