At sunset on Saturday, Jan. 9, approx. 2,000 large gulls and one Brown Pelican were flying or settling for the night in Cambridge, MD on the Choptank River over "Jone's Boat House" and sand-spit which is off the point where Hambrooks Blvd. makes its first dead end turn to the left. The gulls and pelican could also be seen from Great Marsh, off Talbot and/or Somerset Avenues at the river, looking toward "Jone's Boat House". The large numbers of gulls may only mass in the early morning and toward sunset, after feeding at area landfills. We were not there at midday or in the afternoon, but only arrived after 4pm. At Oakley St. and the river, the usual large numbers of Canvasbacks, several Redheads, Greater Scaup and Wigeon were present. Mary Ann Todd Dave Czaplak
