Dear Harriette, Check out the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology's Library of Natural Sounds web site. http://birds.cornell.edu/LNS/index.html Be sure to checkout the equipment section. Pay attention to the microphone section too. A good source of equipment is Stith Recording, also in Ithaca, NY. http://www.stithrecording.com/ The Marantz 222 bird version ($432.00) is a good starting point for analogue recording. It is probably the cheapest recorder that you can buy that will give acceptable results. Coupled with a Sennheiser ME ($214.00) and K6 ($219.00) power module (series microphone you can get great recordings. I would recommend the ME66 short shotgun mic as a starting point. It will not give the sample amount of amplification as a parabola but it is a whole lot more portable and much easier to aim. So you see, that even a really basic system will cost around $865.00 If you have any more questions, please feel to write back, Wil Hershberger
