Yes, I built mine.  I used a table saw, a drill motor to predrill
for screws and short deck screws to assemble.  The lid is on top and
requires a hinge.  As I said, most predator birds (blue jays,
cowbirds, starlings, etc.) don't seem to get into the nest area.  We
have a few English Sparrows ( in  Prince Frederick on Main St., 300
yds S of the Court House).  Some have tried to nest, but I removed
nest material from the box and no additional attemt was made. I've
seen no evidence of them bothering the blue birds.
