Hi Linda --

There is a new guide to birding Maine, and an older guide to birding coastal
Maine, but for one day, probably not worth the investment.

However, there are some good sites near Bath -- depends on your targets.
For example, late August is an excellent time for staging terns off the
Maine coast and you can expect to find Roseate and Arctic. The site I always
go to is Pine Point (where five species of terns can routinely be found --we
had up to 40 Roseates last month!) but that is not convenient for Bath.
Popham Beach State Park has Nelson's Seaside Sparrows in the marsh, and my
coastal birding guide says the beach is good to look for Roseate and Arctic
Terns, which nest offshore, and there are also some Black Guillemots. Morse
Mountain Preserve, adjacent to Popham, is supposedly good for migrants and
in the forest, Ruffed Grouse, and sometimes boreal species such as Blackbacked
WP and Gray Jay. Remember landbirds will be moving and Maine has 25 species
or more of nesting warblers, so these could show up anywhere.

I have visited Reid Beach S.P. and seen Black Guillemots offshore there as
well, also Common Eiders everywhere.

Hope this gives you enough for a day's birding!
