Andy... Having spent a bit of time around Jones Point on Wednesday looking at old Virgina/Maryland Boundary Committee markers, as well as looking at a map, I concluded that the snags are in District waters. On the opposite shore from VA, as seen from Jones Point north of the WW bridge, I estimated the point where the boundary line hits land to be slightly north of a bank that has exposed dirt. This bank is just north of the cove that is almost directly across from where I was standing. It has a name, and I don't have my map here, thus I don't remember it. I also estimated, and I am less certain of this, that the boundary line extends from this dirt bank on the east shore of the Potomac to about the third bridge support east of the eastern most draw bridge support. Thus if you connect an imaginary line from these points, you have the border. Clearly this is not an easy thing to do, but it is about the best I could come up with. Having concluded the above, I then consulted a few birders that I figured would have a pretty good feel for the boundary, and they may comment to your post. However, they agreed, with some variation, with my guess. They all agreed that the snags that the cormorants sit one are in DC. On this note, I do have a question that someone out there may be able to answer. The ADC map of the District shows a small tip of Jones Point, on land, is actually in MD. It is the southern and eastern most portion of Jones Point. It is the land to the southeast of the two VA/MD Boundary Commission Markers. I also noted on another map that this was the case, that this small chunk of land is in MD. Anyone know anymore about this? I find it interesting that there may be a bit of MD on the "Virginia" side of the Potomac. Cheers, Todd Day BlkVulture@aol.com Jeffersonton, VA
