The St. Mary's County, MD, Kelp Gull continues at the usual Sandgates, MD, location daily for the past several weeks. Though the time of day is variable, the Kelp Gull has been seen (either by reliable Sea Breeze restaurant staff or visiting birders) at least at some time every day, including weekends. The number of Great Black-backed Gulls there is increasing and the Kelp Gull's coverts are decreasing, but the distinctive leg coloration and single mirror on P10 continue to set the Kelpster apart from the GBBGs. Birders are still coming to try for the gull, and this past Saturday (9/11) boasted at least 11 birders before 11 a.m. Some of the birders were repeat visitors, while others were deliriously happy first-timers who were--at last!--able to come up with some lame excuse, er, I mean, valid reason to be in the area of Southern Maryland. In any case, given several hours' worth of waiting, everyone should have successful sightings. Jane Kostenko jkostenko@somd.lib.md.us California, Maryland Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery.
