The bird was near the lighthouse and was singing a textbook case of a three note "free-BEEEE-o" song. Actually, there were several empids in the area, including a Least, and we never got a clear look at the bird singing the Alder song. But the song was well heard by all three of us over about a 15 minute period. We are long overdue for this bird in Cecil - there are records for all the surrounding areas. The Alder was just one of MANY migrant songbirds passing through Turkey Point on an exciting Sunday morning. There were an overwhelming number of warblers - lots of individuals of 16 species. The trees were so full of movement that it was difficult to know where to look. Especially noteworthy were large numbers of Tennessee and Chestnut-sided and quite a few Blackburnian and Cape May. We had killer looks at a Nashville feeding low in the vines right in front of us. There were also many Red-breasted Nuthatches - I think we estimated 50 or more, but they were hard to count because they were so spread out. Also, singles of Purple Finch, maybe 5 in all. Leslie took complete notes on species and numbers and I'm sure she will make a detailed post later. I suspect she's still out counting hawks this morning.
