Dave: My imm was similar to yours but didn't flap. It was a fairly brownish bird but the cheek patch was nearly formed. I have not noticed how variable the white on the leading edge is on Horneds. I rarely see them fly. Friday I had a Song Sparrow with a white face, cheeks, and chest. There was a dark auricular spot and the crown was reddish brown. The streaking on the chest started just above the breast spot. Otherwise looked like a normal bird. Stopped me for a minute though.
