Patty It's one of those British (European) things like Common Moorehen. They named it first, maybe before the US was colonized. It probably does not have much to do with gender. Common names tend to be a bit random anyway. I personnelly like Oldsquaw but that could be offensive to some. Long-tailed may also be more politically correct in these days of over sensitivity. It's not much we can do about it, so let's go birding and call it what ever we want. How about Clangula hyemalis.. Regards.
