My resident summer tanager picked up a new trick during his stay in the
tropics - coming to bird feeders. Since arriving about a week ago, he has
been coming to my suet feeder and eating the suet cake with the seeds in
it. He ignores the one without seed, and ignores banana chunks. I've
never heard of a summer tanager at a feeder before, but if anyone has, I'd
be interested in knowing what else he might want to eat. The other odd
thing is that he makes quite a ruckus - constantly calling - as he
approaches, but then quiet while there and afterwards. It's really amazing
to see both the summer redbird and the regular redbird at the feeder at the
same time.
