Corrections & additions to my post for the dates June 12-16, 2004:

The place where the pelicans nest just S. of Smith Island, MD, is South
Point Marsh, VA, not South Marsh Point. Bland names are easier for me to
get wrong than distinctive names. One of my favorites is a school across
from a library where I sometimes work: Central East Middle School. South
Point Marsh is in Accomack County, not Accomac but the county seat is the
town of Accomac. Like other Native-American names it has been
transliterated in various ways, including Accawmacke.

John Weske e-mailed me that he and 11 or so others in Dave Brinker's crew
banded 900 Brown Pelican chicks at South Point Marsh on Wed., June 16. The
previous day one of the chicks slashed John's face, resulting in a c. 5
inch vetical shallow cut on his left cheek resembling a German dueling scar
or Schmiss. Very distinguished looking and certainly to be worn with a
sense of honor.

Best to all.-Harry Armistead, 523 E. Durham St., Philadelphia, PA
