Among my lifers discovered near the C&O were a Yellow-billed Cuckoo that flew into view while I was searching for a Parula singing near Riley's Lock. Never located the Parula. Another time I was biking along the Crescent Trail and stopped to try to find a singing Parula. A Barred Owl silently settled into a tree less than 100 feet from me. So of course, my rule is: always stop to look for the Northern Parula!
