I ran into this same problem when with my extremely physically fit In-laws who enjoy hiking (good for them!).  
I ask the hiking the group to march on ahead of me on the trail -- especially if we are climbing up a hill or mountain.  I either meet them at the top or the end, or they pick me up where I am on the way back down.  At times, I almost caught up with them due to low bird activity.  It worked out fine and everyone was happy --- especially me with new life birds.
