This afternoon the environmental biology class from Montgomery College had pontoon boat front row seats on the 10 Mile Creek arm of Little Seneca Lake in Black Hill Regional Park, Boyds, MD. Thermaling pretty high up at first, the bald eagles, an adult and a juvenal, began circling more tightly over the lake and coming down in elevation. The adult dropped its talons which was a hint that hunting about to begin. In tandem the two came across the lake waters intent upon their prey. The adult made about five passes with the juvenal trailing behind. A large raft of Canada Geese were seemingly unperturbed by menacing talons raking the water right next to them! Finally achieving success, the adult flew up with the fish tightly gripped and settled into a bare tree along the water's edge. The juvenal followed behind and also settled into the same tree. We had binoculars so were able to watch with great success and satisfaction.
