If I am not mistaken, shooting a whooping crane is a violation of several 
FEDERAL laws: the migratory bird treaty and the endangered species act.  If left 
to the locals, this act may very well be swept under the cornfield.  Federal 
USF&WS enforcement officials should be involved.
