This this morning (7/21) from Alexandria birder Fred Bogar,

Ray Smith and I traveled from Reston to the Thurmont area of Maryland yesterday, February 20, in an effort to see the Northern Lapwing. We were unsuccessful. We did, however, see a Eurasian Collared-Dove at 14608 Roddy Road at about 1100. We did not realize the significance of the bird as we had just returned from Florida where the bird is common. Local birders informed us that the bird is quite rare, if not unique.

The bird was sitting on a telephone wire above the mailbox at that location. What distinguished the bird was the square tail, a splash of white, a pinkish back, and the diagnostic black slash on the back of the neck. We are quite certain of our observation.

Neither Ray nor I have access to MDOSPREY. Would someone please forward this information to them?
