I just got back from Port Deposit, where I met another birder named Dirk
who nicely pointed out the Black-headed Gull. It was at the end of the long
pier
and very obvious. We also saw at least two Little Gulls, possible more. It
was hard to keep
track of the flying gulls. Many, many Bonaparte's as well, one Coot, one
Pied-billed Grebe.
I am pretty sure I saw the Red-necked Grebe north of the condos. It stood
out among
the Bonaparte's Gulls, much bigger, with the long neck and bill. The
lighting was
not good. Even with binoculars all I could see was a dark grebe with a dark
neck and white underparts that showed as it shifted in the water. I went
back to tell
Dirk, but when we walked back to the spot where I saw the grebe, it
was nowhere to be found, of course. We scanned the water for another 20 minutes
or so, and then I had to leave, so I never got a spotting-scope view of it.
