Hi,
June 18
The WORM-EATING WARBLER and the OVENBIRD were again
singing along the Fort Circle Hiker/Biker Trail
segment that goes west from the junction of Fort Davis
Road and Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, thus upgrading these
species to probable for the Anacostia NW block.
In Fort Dupont Park proper, along Fort Davis Drive
just north of Massachusetts Avenue SE, I saw and heard
three singing OVENBIRDS. One of them landed in the
middle of the drive for a minute and watched me. Also
right there, I heard a PINE WARBLER singing from the
area with three pine trees. Another segment of the
Fort Circle Hiker/Biker Trail, this one heading east
from Mass. Avenue just east of Fort Davis Drive, held
yet another OVENBIRD along with singing SCARLET
TANAGERS and other woodland birds.
June 19
At Oxon Hill (Childrens) Farm in Forest Heights,
Prince Georges County Maryland, a blockbusting turned
bushwacking team led by David Mozurkewich fearlessly
stumbled upon a singing but invisible SUMMER TANAGER,
a pleasant surprise early in the morning. We also
heard at least 6 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS (and saw two of
them), three WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, a pair of Yellow
Warblers, three Bald Eagles including a full adult,
five Red-shouldered Hawks in the air at about the same
time, two adult Red-tailed Hawks flying near the
Red-shoulders, and BALTIMORE and ORCHARD ORIOLES. And
other species. The raptors were seen from the paved
biking/hiking trail that goes through the park, and at
least a couple of the chats can be heard from the
path.
